|“Sumatra jungle trek – orangutans and much more”
I contacted Omano at Sumatra jungle trek as a last minute and he accommodated me as a solo traveler and I joined 3 others. We did 3 night 4 day trek, and 3 of us spent 2 extra days at the beginning to relax around Bukit Lawang. If you are going to Bukit Lawang primarily to see Orangutan then you need only do the day trek or the overnight trek. Most if the semi wild orangutans stay close to the feeding station so you see them in the first day trek. However in staying only 1 night you miss out on so much the jungle has to offer. This is no walk in the park, be prepared for exhausting steep climbs up and steep dissents down using the vines to support you, and wading waist deep across rivers to get to camp- it was fantastic, if you enjoy the outdoors then stay as long as you can in the jungle. You are rewarded at the end of each day with a swim in the river at and tea and biscuits! Omanos crew clearly love what they do, they take such great care of the environment, not something i always encountered in Indonesia. They are a happy bunch of lads who are great at spotting wildlife, and take really good care of you in the jungle. At night their stories, magic tricks and card games were the stuff of legends. Take plenty of mosquito repellent and shoes you are happy to walk rivers in. If my visa wasn’t finished I would have stayed longer in this gem of a village.
